What is Word & Character Counter?
A word and character counter measures the length of a piece of writing. Paste or type any text and it reports the words, the characters with and without spaces, the sentences and the paragraphs, along with an estimate of how long the text takes to read. People use one whenever a limit matters: a college essay capped at 650 words, a meta description that must stay under 160 characters, a caption or a school assignment. Instead of guessing, you see exact figures that change the moment you edit.
How Does It Work?
Each time the text in the box changes, Vebliy runs a few small calculations on it. Words are counted by splitting the text wherever there is a space, tab or line break. Characters are counted as the symbols you actually see, so an emoji or an accented letter counts once. A sentence ends at a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark followed by a space, and every new line counts as a paragraph. Reading time divides the word count by 238, the average adult silent reading speed. All of this happens entirely in your browser. No text or file is uploaded, saved or sent anywhere, so it is safe for private drafts.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the counter decide what a word is?
Any group of characters separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks counts as one word. A hyphenated term such as well-known is one word, and numbers count too.
Why are there two character counts?
The first figure includes every space and line break, while the second removes them. Some forms limit one and some limit the other, so both are shown.
How accurate is the sentence count?
It counts a sentence each time a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark is followed by a space or the end of the text. Decimals like 3.14 and abbreviations like Dr. are ignored, but unusual punctuation can still skew it.
Is my text stored or sent to a server?
No. The counting runs inside your browser and nothing you type is uploaded or saved. When you refresh or close the page, the text is gone.
How is the reading time calculated?
It is the word count divided by 238 words per minute, the average adult silent reading speed for non-fiction. Treat it as a rough estimate, since individual readers vary.
