What is Unit Converter?

A unit converter turns a measurement from one unit into another, such as kilometres into miles, kilograms into pounds or megabytes into gigabytes. People need it every day: following a recipe from another country, comparing the size of a plot of land, checking a flight distance, reading a weather forecast or working out how much storage a video will use. This free converter covers six common categories and shows the answer in every unit of the category at once, so you can pick the one you need without running the calculation again.

How Does It Work?

Every unit in a category is defined by its relationship to one base unit, for example the metre for length or the byte for data. To convert, the tool first changes your number into the base unit and then into the unit you chose. Temperature is handled with formulas rather than a single factor, because Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin start from different zero points. The result is rounded to remove tiny computer arithmetic errors, so twelve inches shows as exactly one foot. All calculation happens in your browser as you type, and nothing you enter is sent to a server.

How to Use It

  1. Choose a category such as Length, Weight or Data storage.
  2. Type the number you want to convert into the Value box.
  3. Pick the starting unit in From and the unit you need in To.
  4. Read the result at once, or scan the table below to see every unit in the category.
  5. Press Swap to reverse the direction, or Copy result to take the number with you.

Key Features

  • Six categories: length, weight, temperature, area, speed and data storage
  • Live results that update as you type, with no convert button
  • A full table showing your value in every unit at the same time
  • Indian favourites such as quintal, tola, hectare and square yard (gaj)
  • Both decimal (KB, MB, GB) and binary (KiB, MiB, GiB) data units
  • One-click swap and copy, and no data leaves your device

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do megabytes and mebibytes give different answers?

A megabyte (MB) is exactly 1,000,000 bytes, which is what storage makers and mobile plans use. A mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes, which is how many operating systems count. The converter lists both so you can match whichever number you are reading.

How accurate are the conversions?

Factors such as 1 inch = 25.4 millimetres and 1 pound = 0.45359237 kilograms are exact by international definition. Results are shown to about twelve significant digits, which is far more precision than everyday use needs.

Can I convert negative temperatures?

Yes, type a minus sign before the number, for example -40 degrees Celsius, which equals -40 degrees Fahrenheit. The only limit is absolute zero, and the tool tells you when a value is colder than anything can be.

Can I type numbers with commas or decimals?

Use a full stop as the decimal point, for example 2.5. Commas and spaces are treated as thousands separators and ignored, so 1,250 and 1250 mean the same thing. Scientific notation such as 1e6 also works.

What is Mach based on?

The tool uses 340.29 metres per second, the speed of sound in dry air at sea level at 15 degrees Celsius. The real figure changes with temperature and altitude, so treat Mach results as an approximation.
